At the foot of the cross
Notes from our Good Friday time of reflection 'at the foot of the cross'. Read the passage from Luke's Gospel and take the time to prayerfully reflect and respond to the comments and suggestions made.
We are going to journey with Jesus to the foot of the cross. I’m going to read the account from Luke’s Gospel stopping from time to time to let us pause and reflect.
1. READ Luke 22:39-46
‘pray that you will not fall into temptation’
Feel the anguish of Jesus as he faced what lay ahead
2. READ Luke 22:47-62
Reflect: How do I compare to Peter?
Do I ever deny Jesus?
Do I need to ask Jesus for his forgiveness?
3. READ Luke 22:63-23:25
Imagine Jesus being mocked and beaten
Imagine him being accused before the elders, the chief priests and teachers of the law
Imagine him being accused before Pilate, the Roman Governor, before Herod, the King, and then mocked again by soldiers, dressed in a Kingly robe.... then imagine how it was for Jesus, as the crowds shouted, ‘Crucify him! Crucify him!’
4. READ Luke 23:26-43
‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’
If you were in the scene, where would you be?
- Amongst the followers? Mourning? In tears?
- Amongst the mockers? Making fun?
- Amongst the criminals, crucified with Jesus?
o Mocking him? Or coming and saying:
‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom’
5. READ Luke 23:44-49
‘At the foot of the cross, I can scarcely take it in,
That the King of all creation, was dying for my sin.
And the pain and agony, and the thorns that pierced your brow,
And the hardness of my sinful heart, that left you there for dead.
And O what mercy I have found, at the cross of Calvary,
I will never know your loneliness, all on account of me.
And I will bow my knee before your throne
Cause your love has set me free.
And I will give my love to you dear Lord
And praise your Majesty x3
